Anyhoo, school is back in session, and as much as I hate getting up and I despise that villanous product of Lucifer known as homework (especially summer homework...blegh), I have to admit in the first 2 days things are going pretty well. I like all my classes and most of my teachers so overall things are grood.

In case you haven't heard, the newest craze sweeping the globe is an incredibly innovative game appearing in many major papers in the U.S. and elsewhere known as Sudoku. You are given a set of 81 squares, in 9 3x3 sets. The numbers 1-9 must appear in every horizontal row, every vertical column, and every 3x3 box. It's so much fun...I solved today's puzzle in the Washington Post comics. I advise anyone and everyone to try it out. The sense of accomplishment when everything is right is incredible. I can see why the rest of the world is captivated.

Meanwhile, I'll be busting my ass (pfft, yeah right) working at a summer camp during the day and going to Drivers' Ed at night. Even though I have repeatedly let them, the good times have yet to roll fully out. They kinda come out, then recede once I head off to BCC for my class. I'm hoping Rhode Island will be cool when I go in a week.

I just got back from the Nats game versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Quite a lot of fun, that. Lessee...

Well, we left my house around 4:48 and drove to my dad's office where we parked and walked to the Metro. After a brief ride behind a huge fat guy's butt (which reminded me of the old chinese proverb, "Crowded Elevator Smell Different to Midget"--I was sitting), we got to the stadium and grabbed our 2nd row seats, right behind the BJ's dugout. Before the game we were "treated" to bad music and mildly suggestive hip thrusts and gyrations courtesy of everyone's favorite fat chicken, Screech. However, this was a perfect prelude to an orgy of pure Blue Jay ass-kicking. The BJs got pounded into the ground so much during this game, I'm surprised the Audoban society didn't protest and impede the progress of baseball at its finest. Truly a memorable experience. But now, as the adrenaline high wears off, I feel less and less like blogging and more and more like falling to slee-Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....................

Summer Camp

So, I'm working as what's called a "Staff Assistant" at Technology Is Cool, aka TIC, Summer Camp. It's the final year in training before I can become a counselor. You do all sorts of random work around the camp all day long, culminating in a massive orgy of steel and asphalt known as Carpool. See, TIC has this incredibly smart system for parents to pick up their kids. The parents drive into the school, get in line behind other parents, and have orange cards with their kids' names on them prominently placed on the dashboard. The "Writers," other staff assistants, write down these names and make lists for a person with a bullhorn standing at the front of the line with the kids to call out. The writers give the lists to "Runners" to, obviously, run them to the front. Behind all this are the "Goers," "Stoppers," and "Directors," all of whom are esentially human traffic cones. To be one of these, you must help sort the cars in the proper order so that when names are called out at the front, the kid can go directly to the front. It's all a very confusing process to explain without showing, but hey, it works.

Cause if it's not, I have no idea what the hell I'm thinking right now. I have three reasons for posting this question, all of which come from mindless browsing on iTunes:

1. Sountrack? Whaaat?
As much as I loved the Enron movie, this is going too far. I read online that iTunes had a soundtrack up and initially thought it was a joke, or a lie. But, no, there's a collection of the music underscoring the film.

2. All the songs are album-only!
You'd think an indie documentary only playing in a couple hundred theaters around the country would take money however they could get it. However, these people got greedy, the exact thing their movie lobbies against, and made the iTunes downloads album-only.

3. Ay carumba!
Add on to that the fact that the album costs $11.99. That's $12 for 11 tracks. I know the film isn't about numbers, it's about people (as the story makes very clear), but someone's not thinking about the numbers here. While other albums charge $.99 per song on iTunes (yes, I know others offer it cheaper, but I like Apple, so sue me), this one seems to think people will pay extra! Now I sound like a total idiot, so I'll just hotlink the picture.

I got back from the new indie documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room a coupla hours ago, and I gotta say, it was pretty damn good. One of the best documentaries I've seen in a while by far, though quite a depressing piece. Still, it's nice to see someone is publicizing the whole truth behind everything and the story associated with the scandal is, in effect, a gripping character study. Anybody who walks into the theater will walk out hating the top Enron guys, but that's probably good. I'm still mulling over the depressing statistic said by one electrical worker (or some job that looked like it--hard to tell). At its high point, his 401k was $237,000 and due to Kenneth Lay's greed and corruption, he sold it off for $1200. If there was a pitying smile, it would be here instead of this lame little colon and open parenthetical mark:

But the movie was still great. Go see it now. I saw it at Bethesda Row, and quite enjoyed myself. I had never been to the theater before, and it wasn't too shabby. Much better than UA, erm, excuse me, Regal Bethesda.

And I'm back for a brief rant. I just opened the DVD for the classic movie adaptation of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. It is one of the unparalleled pieces of both American literature and cinema, yet on the back, two words appeared that made me fume. It lists a quote from TV guide calling the movie, "Emotionally Gripping."

WHY THE HELL DO WE NEED QUOTES FROM TV GUIDE ON OUR DVDS??? Some dipshit down at 20th Century Fox Classics must have thought, "Oh, this movie needs a modern review written by crackmonkeys who didn't make the cut wrtiting for Playboy." Seriously, I'm pissed. I'll still try to enjoy the movie, but my emotions will not be gripped just cause TV Guide says so...losers...

Now, if you'll look at Brian's comment on my post last night, he said:

"The English department sucks, but not as much as the History one, the Science is underfunded, and the P.E. is underused. Campaign against those, English doesnt matter, really."

Now, there are some kinks in the History Department. But I think they can be resolved much easier than any of the others' problems. Sure, getting rid of Mr. Sylvester was the greatest educational mistake MCPS ever made. And I'm assuming it's either a contract or sheer stupidity that made them not hire Mr. O'Brien, who subbed for Ms. Cockrell while she was having surgery done. But these are forgivable mistakes. The history department WORKS on its material. They rarely give out "you did it" grades (which are probably the main source of points for English students) and the teaching is more or less pretty good.

You say science is underfunded. But anyone who's had Mr. Chifrin know that he makes a big point about the fact that MCPS pays him a lot of money to teach. Too bad they're not paying for much. Alright, I'll concede, he can do a decent Bob Dylan impression and he's got a sick enough sense of humor to keep teenagers entertained. But he, along with most of the rest of the science department (he's the resource head, so I'm naming him), seem to have this crazy idea that homework punishes and does nothing more. HOMEWORK HELPS, for God's sake! You can't blame us for not learning when we've had very little to learn from. Just assign some, and DON'T make it "optional." Yeah, like anyone's going to do that besides me...

P.E.? Pfft! Forget those lardballs. Next department.

And who says English doesn't matter? We use it in our country, other countries often make it a language they teach in school (Japan requires that kids take 8 years of it!), and it makes us sound intellimagent. Plus, reading literary classics allows students to think and enjoy themselves without reality TV, dumb crap like Jerry Springer, horrible rap music that should have stopped with its roots in jazz and blues, and bad videogames that have more blood in them than Dick Cheney's personal emergency medical service. Sure, I've picked the lowest of the low to illustrate my point (there are exceptions to the bad things in TV, music, and VGs), but English is incredibly important. And MCPS has screwed us over from day one. Until the new SAT came out (like a month ago), they had this insane notion that they don't need to teach grammar. "Yes, now we're an elementary school, not a grammer school, so we don't have any specific things we have to teach in our title." And the process continues. A buncha states in New England continually crank out little Mazis-es, and we're stuck with a dumb essay/speech assignment with due dates that have changed more than the Texas flag. And speaking of Mrs. Mazis, I've only had two good English teachers, ever: her and Ms. Hazard. And now they're both gone. I'm just annoyed. I'm feeling tripledoublesuperplusungood right now.

So, I've been reading 1984 in English class and I was wondering...does anyone think this sort of bizarre, radical, totalitarianism is possible? I know it was written with the Cold War in mind, but it seems to me that after another one or two hundred years, we may have advanced techonlogy enough and cross-bred between races enough to have a single, dominant-over-anything race controlled by a single mysterious leader. I don't know, I definitely don't think it could happen during our lifetimes, but the study of history has made me realize how much can happen in 100, 50, or even 5 years! Just a thought....

I can't think of two better words to describe Sarah Vowell's new book Assassination Vacation. As you may know, Vowell is the voice of Violet in the Incredibles, but her main passion is U.S. history, more specifically presidents who have been assassinated. Weird, but very, very interesting.

She has put together a masterful piece about her journeys learning all she can about her intriguing and necrocentric topic. I bought the audiobook version from audible.com, and there's not only great writing (and perfect dedpan humor through the narration by Vowell herself), but many big-names doing the parts of historical figures. In a darker, more serious tone, Conan O'Brien plays Abraham Lincoln's pensive son Todd. And in what some would call a "corrupt bargain," Brad Bird (mastermind behind the Incredibles) plays two roles, but I have not gotten to that part yet. Vowell is full of amazing info. I strongly urge anyone and everyone to buy this book. And the best part is, even if you don't know (or care to know) much about U.S. history, that's all right. I'll fill you in on what you need to know: Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, and William McKinley are three presidents who were assassinated in the time frame of less than half a century. That's it.

And speaking of history, I've actually made progress in my AP studying (gasp!). The only thing is, I already feel more prepared for AP US than NSL. We have barely mentioned the AP test in NSL, while in US, sure we're ridiculously behind schedule, but Ms. Cockrell is doing a damn good job of what she can do to get us ready in time. I think after she does retire (current policy: staying on at least till next year), she should put out a book of her own with everything she knows about U.S. History*. The paperback version would weigh more than three elephants juggling solid lead anvils, but I'd read it. Or at least buy the Audible release.

*And of course, there would be anecdotes about her children and blowing off raccoon skulls with a shotgun.

Which Historical Lunatic Are You?

Well, my computer crashed yesterday, but luckily it's back to normal thanks to a wonderful program called GoBack. We thought we had lost everything--but now the compy is fine! It's made by Roxio, and I'm not sure if it came with the computer or not, but if you don't have it, I would strongly urge you go out and get it. We'll back up everything anyway (that'll just make my transition to Mac all the easier...), but it has done us such an excellent service. I've never been more proud of a piece of software on a PC. I mean, Adaware was great, but this is just REALLY great. I'm so happy.

Let's face it: the Simpsons just isn't funny anymore. Last night's episode was just a pale imitator of the classic Lisa's Wedding episode, and it was paler than a ghost. There were at most two jokes I laughed at. While watching the season finale of Arrested Development, however, there were maybe two whole minutes where I wasn't laughing. The only thing is, viewers are still preferring crap like Fear Factor, and AD's only chance is in not being in sweeps and surviving from DVD sales. Much like Family Guy, the ratings may not be spectacular, but DVDs let it survive (and now, come back. Hooray!). Maybe, since ads don't pay for much anymore today, they could keep on making AD episodes for DVD. I'd buy them! Multiple times, if necessary. Please watch the show the next time it is on, even if you've already seen the episode. Just watch and laugh. And learn. But only a little. And watch some more. Please?

So I've been watching two DVDs I got today...The Incredibles and MST3K: The Essentials. Here's my review of both:

The Incredibles
OK, this DVD might as well be called "Buy This DVD now or God shall cast you into everlasting damnation," but that wouldn't be family-friendly and it would probably hurt the image of the Holy Trinity of Pixar. Still, I'm telling anyone who is reading this: if you haven't already, buy this DVD now or God shall cast you into everlasting damnation. Seriously, I've called things awexome before, but this time I mean it.

First the movie. Super as ever, but now there are two audio commentary tracks to listen to. I have listened to the one with Brad Bird and a few other members of the Pixar Brain Trust, and it's a good bit more interesting than a lot of DVD commentaries. Sure, they spend a bit of time talking about how hard it was, but they become conscious of this, they announce it, and they stop. That shows that they actually care that people are sitting at home with Star Wars M&Ms in their left hand and a diet sunkist in the other, praying that their viewers do not just unplug their iMacs and walk away. They cared enough to keep me interested, and that's saying something.

Then, this DVD is PACKED with bonus features. I have juggled the specials with studying for my upcoming AP Tests (omigod, there's so little time left...), but I am so glad I did. Truly fun and truly incredible.

Then there are hidden features. Another thing that Pixar has exceeded the call of duty with. I was able to find a number of Easter Eggs (but only cause I was looking for them), which range from deep insults of public school (yet very, very, true ones) to a guy getting killed by a large rubber ball to an animator reading lines for a camera with a mouth full of chocolate cake. All in all, not too shabby.

I am constantly inspired with not only the finished product that comes out of Pixar, but the ridiculous amount of work put into it. The people who speak on the DVD are practically sages, extolling their infinite wisdom. In short, buy this DVD now or God shall cast you into everlasting damnation.

MST3K: The Essentials
Now, so far I've only seen the first disc, with the ridiculously horrible movie Manos: The Hands of Fate. Oh...dear...God...

This movie is abysmal, and the keen bots and Joel (this is from before that other guy took over...you know, the head script guy who actually became funnier than Joel after a short while...Mike?) make care ful note of that. It is preceded by an equally bad piece that can only be qualified as propaganda...for Chevrolet. I have never been so ashamed of an output of this country since Michael Moore or the KKK.

Buy this DVD only if you don't particularly like Manos: The Hands of Fate. And if you haven't ever seen it, that's probably good. In fact, it's very good. I would never be able to tolerate it without the MST3K commentary.

Apparently, unbeknownst to me but knownst to a lot of other people, the whole silence day thing on Wednesday was a nationwide thing, not just some random action of the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance). In response, homophobic-but-most-likely-in-the-closet-themselves republicans are having a Truth Day which publicly condemns homosexuality and is, as one adept student in my NSL class called it, similar to a Nazi march in a town full of Holocaust survivors. I don't think they shouldn't be allowed to do this (it is protected speech and they can have their opinions), but the message their effort conveys is that others shouldn't believe what they wish. If the GOP would just let people alone, then maybe they could focus on other things, like fixing the economy, figuring out a permanent solution to social security, actually doing anything Bush said in his State of the Union, stopping poverty, improving the schools, saving the environment, or actually finding time to use the extra $115 million they have left over to fight terrorism. Having one's priorities in the order they are now is like a person ordering another to procrastinate immediately and without delay. It just doesn't make any sense. And that's my two sense, since this country certainly needs some.

So today was the last real day of this week, cause the band and chorus people (of which there are A LOT), are leaving tonight for Orlando. They're driving all night and, without a chance to eat, shower, brush their teeth, or any of the like, they're going to Universal Orlando tomorrow morning. Ha ha! Disneyworld is better and you guys will be all smelly and grody. And probably sleep-deprived, considering that it's impossible to sleep on those charter buses.

And today was when some people, in protest of treatment of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, put tape on their mouths and didn't speak as part of a campaign for the Gay-Straight Alliance. It strikes me as a bit weird. I mean, I'm all for toleration and I think that a lot of people are more influenced by Will and Grace than by real homosexual people. When I was at Brown last summer, an openly gay guy lived down the hall, but he wasn't effeminate or anything. He was perfectly fine and normal in spite of his sexual preference, and people need to keep in mind that not all gay people are obnoxious...just the ones on TV. Still, I don't get the whole don't-speak thing. It doesn't seem like it's accomplishing anything.

Rather than go out and do something that might be considered 'normal' by most people's standards yesterday (look at the cherry blossoms, go for a walk, sleep in), I went with my dad to a convention called MIT On the Road (MOTR). We listened to all these really great lectures designed so that even someone with as poor knowledge of science as me could understand them. They all related to the brain, and all were very interesting. Plus, I got to meet the new president of MIT! Very, very cool. Assuming that you are also a geek and consider MIT to be 'cool.'

Oh, and on Friday, my dad and I saw the new movie Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore. Naturally, I just went to it cause I'm a Red Sox fan, but this is easily the funniest thing I've ever seen Fallon in. Sure, he was good in SNL every now and then, but this movie was great! I highly reccomend it for anyone with at least a minimal interest in sports. Most of the reviews are positive, except for the ever-wrong Washington Post. I have not agreed with a single review of theirs in a long time. This movie was good, as was the Terminal (highly underrated dramedy--buy the DVD!), and yes, Elf was actually funny. They should stop writing all high-and-mighty and just admit that they're wrong. Or, better yet, they should hire me to write the reviews. The only sensible person writing about movies for the post is the woman who writes about the ratings and family viewing. She briefly noted how good the movie was and although her name eludes me, I congratulate her on realizing what a funny movie Fever Pitch is.

Well, the upside to using free services such as Blogger is that they're, um...free. But the downside is that sometimes things happen to them due to the large number of people on their services. I copied and pasted a thing about being addicted to Star Wars that I found off of a link from Chrissie's livejournal, but for some reason it never showed up. There still seem to be some problems even now, as clicking the "Blogger" icon just gives you a weird error message. I had to type in blogspot.com just to get here. Oh, well. And if y'all don't see this post, let me know and I'll post another one. @:-0 (for lack of a good smiley, I used my random "singing Elvis" one)

So, to make up for my most recent absences (Blogger-induced or not), I'm going to post my review of the Star Wars: Clone Wars Volume 1 DVD that I bought over Spring Break and watched yesterday. For those of you who don't know, Lucas hired Samurai Jack vet Genndy Tartakovsky to make a microseries of short cartoons designed to bridge the gap between Episodes 2 and 3 of the Star Wars saga. Volume 1 came out on DVD recently, and of course, it caught my eye and I bought it.

The cartoons are overall very nice. The storyline is decent, but the voices...blegh. With the exception of Anthony Daniels (C3PO), none of the originals do their own voices, which is fine, but still there's just...it just seems like the casting call wasn't loud enough, so to speak. Padme sounds nothing like Natalie Portman (FYI to Kit: think Daisy or Peach from the recent Mario games). Yoda is fine, although it's clear it's not Frank Oz. And even though I don't especially like Hayden Christensen in the role of Anakin, his "sound-alike" does not, um...sound...alike.

One of the major problems I have with the storyline, however, is Padme's part. Wearing a slightly phallic winter coat, she and Master Yoda detour while en route to nowhere at all to the very Hothic world of, like, Illum, or something like that. She acts like some huge hero, completely out of character for the movies' Padme, and is no better than say, Misty from the crappy Pokemon anime series.

Speaking of anime, these episodes are kind of half-anime, half-normal animation, much like Samurai Jack. Overall, the animation is well-done, especially in the battle scenes. The best characters out of those in the episodes are probably Mace Windu and Yoda, but Mace's kick ass battle scene (I was almost expecting to hear a John Williams-orchestrated excerpt from Shaft) is horribly marred by this stupid kid who the camera frequently cuts to. He's a Dantooine native, and looks like he was drawn by a five-year-old! He never says anything, and just gives Mace his water bottle at the end of the fight. Really, really, f***ed up.

We also get an encore from other Jedi, and are introduced to some. Ki-Adi-Mundi is in the final fight, and we get to see a lightsaber battle underwater earlier on. One addition I really liked were the ARC clone troopers, elite commando versions that go on special missions. They're more stealthy and a lot cooler, but still one question is unanswered: if they're elites and different, how can they be CLONES? Bizarre, but cool nonetheless.

I guess the animation makes it a lot harder for someone to suspend their disbelief, but I just kept on seeing all these fallacies and weird things that shouldn't be in there. Oh, well.

As for special features, there's a Star Wars Episode 3 trailer (a teaser which I had never seen before--kind of interesting), plus the usual plugs for the latest video games from LucasArts. There's a decent BTS documentary, still galleries, and audio commentaries. I REALLY hate the audio commentaries. Tartakovsky treats us like little kids, explaining in extremely simplistic detail exactly what's going on at that point in time. I couldn't stand him, so I just switched to the normal audio track and watched the toons again with no annoying comments.

Overall, I give the DVD a 6/10. Great if you just want some mindless entertainment while at a friend's house or something, but probably not worth fighting over the last copy for. I've never really liked Samurai Jack either, and I feel that someone better could have been enlisted to really make these cartoons something special. Unfortunately, these guys have already started on Volume 2, which leads directly to the beginnning of Episode 3.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. Just got back from Spring Break with no internet the entire time. However, today in the library on a whim I did a google search and found this great site. It's the website of Orson Scott Card (author of the Ender series, Shadow series, and who knows how many others). You can read the original "short" story that inspired Ender's game (Maezr? Hmm...), but my favorite part is when he writes his weekly columns as Uncle Orson. Very amusing, and although I don't always agree with him, he often points out stuff the average human wouldn't think about. But he's not an average human. He's the god of sci-fi writing.

Yup, it's 3/14 (or, as they write it in some countries, 3.14), so that means it's pi Day! The one really big upside to taking RL precalac: you eat pie on pi day. And students that bring in pies get extra credit. The downside to RL: there's two days of tests immediately following pi day. However, we got the best part of the day. Our class is 8th period, so we counted down until (on 3/14) 1:59:26. 3.1415926. Hehe...

We're such dorks.

Robots and Droids

I just saw the movie Robots, which includes the Star Wars: Episode III trailer. IT...LOOKS...AWESOME. I'm telling you, I think this could be the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back. Also in the trailer package was a movie with Jimmy Fallon about the Red Sox and being a big fan of them. Looks pretty good, and even if the reviewers hate it, I'll go see it anyway since it's about the Sox.

Speaking of movies that reviewers hated, many newspapers didn't like Robots, but I actually thought it was pretty good! The animation was excellent, the plot was funny, the music was decent. Plus, there are LOTS of cool background jokes to spot. I mainly like the movie because, like any good Shakespeare play (Robin Williams being compared to Shakespeare? Gah!), there's entertainment anyone can enjoy (lotsa fart jokes), but many in-jokes and references (Lord of the Rings, Scarface, etc.) and even some sexual innuendo! Don't restrict yourself to the basic "follow your dreams" kiddie dialog when watching the movie. Look around if what they're saying seems trite, and you'll find something on the screen that's more interesting.

Overall: 9/10

Hey! Where's my post? I posted yesterday, but it didn't show up! Blarg.

And today we had a pretty good assembly. It was a standup comedian/motivational speaker called Michael (I forget his last name). He has cerebral palsy (CP), and walked and talked a bit odd, but he was amazingly funny. We tend to associate anyone with a disability as inferior, especially if they have had brain problems. However, Michael was very clever and had some really good jokes. Of course, this being Whitman, he did take a shot (or two) at President Bush, but the majority of his jokes seemed to be based on personal experience (real or fictionalized). Overall, a great assembly.

And I don't care if you beat me to covering the assembly Brian. I do care, however, that Blogger completely didn't put up my post. Should be called Blargger.

Sorry I haven't been on much. I went to the Apple store last night and got the stuff I need for internet on the Mac...should have it set up by next week or earlier (I hope). I also got Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

AWEXOME.

I swear, I've never seen a game that's so, in my opinion, "alive." True, I'm stuck wandering around on the first planet, but in my wandering I have found like a million subplots. People have jobs and do stuff...there are socioeconomic classes in the planet...you even encounter street gangs, extortion, public drunkenness, and thievery. And not in a GTA game! The most fun aspect is battle. Half-RPG, half real-time, it's very well done and the controls are very intuitive, even on a Mac. Sure, it takes a byte out of my Apple (*groan*), or 4.2 GB to be exact, but it's worth it. If you have an XBox, PC, or Mac, get this game. You'll thank me later.
